“Youths of ‘We First’ drive social change in Singapore.”

Youth-led grassroots initiatives are emerging as powerful drivers of social change in Singapore, demonstrating how passion and community spirit can transform lives. From sports and volunteer networks to dialogue sessions, these initiatives highlight the “Our Youth First” ethos, putting community welfare above personal interests and showing that even small actions can make a significant impact. Despite challenges like limited resources and sustainability, young people continue to play an influential role in uplifting their communities.
MEMBINA Community: Mentoring At-Risk Youth
Among the key players in this movement is MEMBINA
Community, founded by husband-and-wife duo Mohamed Nor Jihad Mohamed Suhaimi and Sri Nur Asma-ul Husna Mohd Hussain, both 28.
The organisation actively mentors 130 at-risk youth and engages nearly 300 more through volunteer programmes and community activities. Beyond receiving guidance, participants are trained to mentor their peers, cultivating leadership skills and reinforcing a culture of mutual support.
“We grew up in rental flats and families in need. We know what it feels like to go through that journey, so we want to ensure no one else has to face the same path,” said Mr Jihad.
Government Recognition and Encouragement
Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Acting Minister for Muslim Affairs, emphasised the importance of nurturing youth-led initiatives. He acknowledged that while many projects stem from genuine goodwill, challenges like funding and sustainability remain.
“It is important to strengthen the ecosystem connecting youth initiatives with suitable agencies, so their efforts can grow, be recognised, and have lasting impact,” said Dr Faishal.
To provide practical support, the government launched the Singapore Government Partnership Office (SGPO) in 2024. The office serves as a one-stop centre for citizens seeking to share ideas or launch grassroots projects.
SGPO provides funding, mentorship, and access to agency networks, ensuring initiatives are resilient, sustainable, and able to scale, allowing youth projects to make long-term positive impact on society.
