Their experiences growing up in families in need became the motivation for husband-and-wife duo Jihad Suhaimi and Husna Hussain to establish MEMBINA Community.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) was founded in 2023 with the goal of supporting at-risk youth and their families.

“The idea came from our own personal experiences. Both of us grew up in rental flats and in families who struggled to make ends meet,” said Ms Husna.

Helping Youth from Diverse Backgrounds

The youth they assist come from diverse and often difficult backgrounds, including school dropouts, those estranged from their families, and young women who became pregnant out of wedlock.

Ms Husna, 29, added that about 90% of the youth they support live in rental flats.

“At MEMBINA Community, we believe that every individual has their own potential and strengths, no matter their background,” said Mr Jihad.

Dr Maliki also expressed his pride in seeing the spirit of youth volunteerism, highlighting that the volunteers not only helped the children buy new clothes but also set a positive example for them.

“We hope the bonds formed through this initiative will encourage more youth to continue contributing to society and inspire these children to grow up as caring and compassionate citizens,” he added.

MEMBINA Community has organised a range of programmes and events, including the MEMBINA Futsal Club, which has successfully attracted 160 participants from across Singapore.

These initiatives aim to integrate at-risk youth back into society, while encouraging them to take part in planning and leading activities themselves.

“At MEMBINA Community, we are ready to welcome and listen to youth who are facing life challenges,” said Mr Jihad.
“We want to encourage them. Don’t be shy, don’t be afraid to seek help from a community that truly cares and is ready to support you,” he added.
